Hoods in general were simply a commonplace form of headgear worn by women as well as men (mostly) of all social standings in the 12th and 13th centuries. Men wore chaperons outside, usually with coifs and occasionally with surcote.Hoods had become fashionable by the 14th century, and they were no longer just practical outdoor garments. They assumed a more closely fitted shape, cut with a long, drooping point, called a liripipe, sometimes worn jauntily over the shoulder. These new forms of hood are generally named chaperons, which is the one you are seeing here. Depictions of fashionable men in the mid-14th century show them wearing this headgear with daring new cote-hardies. The chaperon is most often worn with the hood down, but some are seen to wear theirs up.

Made from a soft polysuede, to give a soft and delicate feel, the chaperon’s premium linnen lining is fully attached along the front and back seams and at the bottom hem.All seams and edges are finished.
